Cappadocia (Kapadokya) :: Carikli Church

Carikli Church

This church which dates back to the end 11th century and the beginning of 12th century owes its name to the footprint on the fresco representing the Ascension of Jesus Christ. The two storeys which make up the covered area are conspicuous as of the facade. A rectangular niche is carved in at the level of the upper storey, flanked by pillars of walls and surmounted by a cornice. The rectangular door in the centre opens on to the church.

The facade of the lower storey is decorated with a blind archway in the shape of a horseshoe. Downstairs are doors opening on to the refectory and other spaces. The small uncovered courtyard in front of the facade is flanked by other spaces. The refectory consists of a long and narrow table and benches surrounding it. We see here the Last Supper represented. The church is a specimen of the architectural style realized on a ground plan in the shape of a Greek cross in the east two corners.

The north, the west and the south arms of the cross are barrel-vaulted. The centre of the east arm is surmounted with a cupola and covered by a flat ceiling. The central space and the east corners are covered by cupolas. The Gospel-cycle is there as well as the hospitality of Abraham, the illustrations of saints and theologians are well preserved.
